Canserbero tops Rolling Stone's list as the best rapper in the Spanish Language

Ana Tijoux, Vico C, Control Machete and La Mala rank in the Top Ten

Rolling Stone magazine recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of rap by releasing a list of the top Spanish-language artists in the genre. Securing the number one spot is the late Venezuelan artist Tirone José González Orama, better known as Canserbero.

Among the top ten, you'll find prominent figures like the Chilean-French Ana Tijoux, Puerto Rican Vico C, Mexico's Control Machete, Cuba's Orishas, and Spanish artist La Mala. The magazine also shines a spotlight on Venezuelan talents such as Akapellah, Lil Supa, Gabylonia, and Apache. Akapellah, recognized for tracks like "Milki," secured the 12th position on the list due to his skill, humor, and creative potential.

Despite Canserbero's tragic passing in Maracay, Aragua, in 2015, he remains a pivotal figure in the underground rap scene. The magazine emphasizes that his untimely death isn't merely about glorifying his legacy; it's about acknowledging the profound artistic spirit and lasting impact he left behind.

Canserbero's lyrics deeply resonated with Latin Americans, delving into complex and dark narratives that touch on themes of life, death, injustice, the streets, and even the tragic assassination of his half-brother. His social consciousness shines through in tracks like 'Guía para la acción,' where he passionately raps:

Debemos actuar con personalidadPorque lo que dicen las masas no siempre es verdadDebemos sentir orgullo de nuestra nacionalidadY extinguir ya la fuga de talento por comodidad

We must act with personality
Because what the masses say is not always true
We must take pride in our nationality
And put an end to the talent drain for convenience

Songs like 'Es épico' also earned recognition for showcasing a rapper with a restless soul shaped by personal history.

Today, I'm going to become a criminal, I don't trust anyone anymore Unless I become a corpse Today, I'm going to avenge my brother, as I promised my father Tooth for tooth, eye for an eye, it's like this
A borrowed balaclava, because I'm not a criminal But the rage I feel won't dissipate, it's so overwhelming I'd never smelled drugs before, but now it's necessary To fulfill what my heart implores.

The list showcases a rich tapestry of rap's Latin American journey, featuring both trailblazing pioneers and contemporary stars who have played a pivotal role in shaping the genre.

In addition to those recognized by Rolling Stone, it's essential to highlight other influential artists who have left an indelible mark on the Latin rap landscape. Notable figures include Kid Frost, Mellow Man Ace, Lisa M, and Ivy Queen during her tenure with The Noise.

Other notable rap legends, include likes of Fat Joe, Big Pun, and the talented Residente, renowned for his work with Calle 13.

For those interested in delving deeper into the Latin American impact on the genre, Latina magazine has a great summary of the pivotal figures who have contributed to its evolution.
