What is GEN33?
GEN33 is an English-language newsletter dedicated to the business and culture of Latin America’s creative industries.
From fashion and music to art, business and tech, it spotlights the trailblazers, thought leaders and experts shaping the region’s cultural landscape.
The name
“GEN” comes from gente — “people” in Spanish and Portuguese — and also nods to the genetic mix and generations that have shaped the region.
The “33” refers to the number of countries that make up Latin America.
Why GEN33?
I created GEN33 to highlight positive stories and developments that too often go unnoticed outside the Spanish and Portuguese-speaking world.
After nearly a decade writing about Latin America for The Business of Fashion, I saw how little English-language coverage existed of its creativity, talent and cultural depth.
Headlines tend to focus on corruption or economic crisis, but this continent is far richer, more varied and more dynamic than those clichés allow. My aim is to showcase the diversity, nuance and innovation that often overlooked in Latin America.
What’s in it for you?
In every edition, I strive to curate stories that matter. Over time I will be adding more original and exclusive content, a podcast and insights you will not find anywhere else. Trend reports, creative industries outlook, must have resources and more.
Thanks for taking part
For now it is just me, juggling paid work, pitching stories, behind the scenes tasks and the many things life throws our way. My aim is to dedicate most of my professional hours to this and your support makes that possible.
When you subscribe and support ($ € £) you are more than just a reader. You are an active participant in a community built by a human for humans, independent of billionaire overlords and their agendas, bots and algorithms, and free from empty AI-generated content. Everything here is written by me and, in the future, occasional contributors.
To invest your time and resources here is to stand for depth, diversity and dialogue.
Who am I and why should you read this?
My name is Graciela Martin. I was born and raised in Caracas Venezuela and am now based primarily in London. There, I earned an MA in Fashion Journalism from London College of Fashion and earlier a diploma in Art Direction for Fashion from Central Saint Martins. For almost a decade I have been covering Latin America for The Business of Fashion and my writing has also appeared in Vogue CNN Style Modern Weekly Style The Future Laboratory and NowFashion.
In addition to my journalism work, I help fashion luxury and lifestyle brands shape their voice and storytelling. My clients include Reiss Fenwick Vivobarefoot Cartier and Montblanc among others.
With this independent project I aim to surface the voices and stories that rarely reach the spotlight and to show the diversity nuance and innovation driving Latin America today. Your subscription directly supports that mission.
Thank you for being here!
